Homeschool Success: How my daughter got into college

Homeschool Success: How my daughter got into college

We Did It! My Homeschooler Is Off to College!

Nine years of homeschooling… and now my daughter is officially heading to college! It’s one of those bittersweet moments where I find myself asking, How did we get here so fast?

Instead of enrolling in another high school just to fill time, she’s jumping straight into her college journey through the Running Start program, working toward her Music Degree. This transition is exciting, overwhelming, and, most of all, proof that homeschooling works.

The Questions & Doubts We Faced

Homeschooling comes with a lot of uncertainty and scrutiny, and I remember all the questions, the doubts, and the raised eyebrows.

I lost count of how many times I heard, "I could never homeschool." Or, "I don’t have enough patience to be home all day with my kids." Some people genuinely couldn’t imagine a world outside of traditional schooling, and others simply doubted whether homeschooling could provide a solid education.

  • “How will she be socialized?” – One of the most common concerns! The reality? Homeschoolers often have more social opportunities because they interact with people of all ages through co-ops, extracurricular activities, sports, volunteer work, and community events.
  • “Can you really teach like a school?” – Homeschooling isn’t about recreating a classroom at home; it’s about providing a personalized education that fits your child’s unique needs. Parents don’t need to be experts in every subject—there are incredible curriculum, online resources, tutors, and support networks to help.
  • “Will she even learn enough?” – Yes! Homeschoolers often outperform their traditionally schooled peers. The flexibility of homeschooling allows students to dive deeper into subjects they love while ensuring they meet core academic requirements.

I won’t lie—when we first started, I couldn’t even imagine getting to this point. I had a hard time planning a lesson around something as simple as the word “apple.” I constantly worried about whether I was doing enough, picking the right curriculum, or if my child would be ready for the future. But through it all, I discovered how to create meaningful education, how to teach her more effectively, and gained new skills and techniques from my NLP training to help guide her through learning challenges. And I am here for you if you need guidance.

Other common concerns parents have include:

  • “What about standardized testing?” – Homeschoolers can take SATs, ACTs, and other required exams just like any other student.
  • “Will colleges even accept homeschool transcripts?” – Yes! Many colleges actively seek out homeschool applicants and have straightforward admission policies for them.
  • “How do I know if I’m doing it right?” – Every homeschool journey looks different, but staying informed, connecting with other homeschool families, and using available resources can help you feel confident in your approach.

But here we are. Not only did she receive a solid education, but she’s also confident, capable, and ready for the next adventure.

The Truth About Homeschooling & College Admissions

A lot of parents worry about whether homeschoolers can get into college. The truth? It’s simpler than you think. Here’s the basic process we followed:

1️⃣ Keep a high school transcript – You can create one yourself or use an online transcript service (I have a few I can recommend. In fact, I have a bunch of resources in my Newsletter. To sign up grab my guide on Learning style at Kimberjoycee.com) .

2️⃣ Apply to the college of their choice – Many colleges welcome homeschoolers and have specific admissions policies for them.

3️⃣ Enroll and start the journey!

That’s it. No complicated processes, no extra hoops to jump through. Homeschooling doesn’t limit college opportunities—it expands them!
