Embracing What You Can and Can’t Control: A Stress-Relieving Guide for Home school Moms

As a home school mom, your days are filled with endless tasks, responsibilities, and the need to be “on” 24/7. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed, constantly battling against the things you can’t control. But what if I told you that learning to identify and focus on what’s within your control could be the key to finding more peace and fulfillment in your home school journey?

This is the core idea behind a helpful tool that can make a big difference for stressed-out home school moms. Let’s dive in and explore how it can benefit you, including the importance of understanding your child’s learning style and finding comfort in God’s Word.

Increasing Awareness of What’s Within and Beyond Your Control

The first step is to enhance your awareness of the factors that are truly within your personal control versus those that are out of your hands. This might seem obvious, but it’s easy to get caught up worrying about things you can’t influence.

Take a moment to reflect on your typical day. Which tasks, decisions, or circumstances are you able to manage or alter? These are the things that fall under your control. On the other hand, what external events, other people’s actions, or unexpected challenges are you unable to change? These are the uncontrollable factors.

By clearly delineating between the two, you can start to shift your focus and energy towards what you can actually impact.

Understanding Your Child’s Learning Style

In addition to identifying what’s within and beyond your control, it’s essential to understand your child’s unique learning style. When you tailor your home schooling approach to their preferences and strengths, you empower them to take more control over their own education.

Whether your child learns best through visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or a combination of methods, acknowledging and accommodating their style can help them feel more engaged, motivated, and in control of their learning journey.

Surrendering to the Uncontrollable

Once you’ve identified the uncontrollable aspects of your home school life and gained insights into your child’s learning style, the next step is to learn how to surrender to the things you can’t control. This doesn’t mean giving up or resigning yourself to a fate you don’t want. Rather, it’s about acknowledging that certain things are beyond your power and choosing to let go of the struggle against them.

As the Bible reminds us, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) When we surrender our stress and worries to God, we can find the peace and strength to face the uncontrollable challenges that come our way.

Actively Coping with the Consequences

While surrendering to the uncontrollable is crucial, it doesn’t mean you’re powerless in the face of those challenges. The final step is to examine how you can actively cope with the consequences of the events or circumstances you can’t control.

This might involve problem-solving skills, stress management techniques, or simply adjusting your expectations. The key is to focus your energy on what you can do to mitigate the impact of the uncontrollable factors, rather than wasting it on futile attempts to change them.

As the Apostle Paul reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

Putting It All Together

Implementing this approach in your home school life won’t eliminate all stress, but it can significantly reduce it. By heightening your awareness, understanding your child’s learning style, surrendering to the uncontrollable, and actively coping with the results, you’ll free up mental and emotional bandwidth to focus on the aspects of homeschooling that you can truly influence and enjoy.
